Can't preview Excel files in File Explorer(Win10)

For many years and Windows versions I, and I believe legions of others, have been bedeviled by the inability to see previews of Excel files (xlsx and xlsm) in Windows' File Manager. One sees "Preview not available" or "This file can't be previewed because of an error in the Microsoft Excel Previewer".

I have seen and tried a number of supposed fixes, but nothing works. Is there any new information about this problem? Does Excel Forum know a way to fix or work around this (IMHO) serious deficiency in File Manager? Has Microsoft given any indication that they will fix this problem?
