Excel 2003 opening files in different instances of Excel

I have a program that runs perfectly on Excel 2003. I also have Office 2019 for viewing .xlsx files, etc when needed. I have run them successfully alongside each other on my computer for years.

When opening files in 2003, they are typically opened in the one instance of Excel, so they communicate effectively with each other.

...Until yesterday, when I needed to do a repair of Office 2019. Now 2003 is doing what occurs in later versions, with each file opening in a new window.

Any thoughts on how I can get it back to the way it used to work?

Try checking:

Excel Options > Advanced > General > Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange

Can't remember how to get there in 2003. If it's ticked, untick it, and vice versa.
