Question Error - "There isn't enough memory to complete this action."

    Hello,
I am getting the following error when opening files larger than 1GB in Excel.

"There isn't enough memory to complete this action. Try using less data or closing other applications."

My system had no issues with opening files of this size before until today.

    MY SYSTEM:
    Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3770 CPU @ 3.40GHz 3.40 GHz
Installed RAM 32.0 GB (31.9 GB usable)
System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
    Microsoft® Excel® for Microsoft 365 MSO (Version 2206 Build 16.0.15330.20216) 64-bit

I have already done the following:
The file is set to manual calculation.
Ignore other apps using DDE is checked
    Unchecked Trust Center settings
Ran Quick Repair and Online Repair

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Can you actually OPEN the file but not do calculations? If you can't open the file, how did you carry out those actions?

Fast answers need visual help. Please read the yellow banner at the top of this page on how to attach a file.

Thank you for the reply. I am unable to OPEN the file at all. It's not only one file. It's any file that is 1GB or higher in size. I am unable to attach it as well due to the size of the file being the issue.

1 Gb is quite a big file. That said, in theory, 2 Gb is the maximum size for 32 bit version of Excel.

What makes the file so big?

Maybe try opening the file in Libre Office ( https://www.libreoffice.org/ ) and see if there is anything untoward.

Thank you again for the help.

I'm using the 64 bit version and have opened the document several times in the past.

A lot of data and formulas. I should of restructured it when I had the chance.

Tried opening it in Libre Office and it doesn't open give any errors. Pushes my system's memory usage to 100% and keeps loading.

Thank you for the help TMS. I finally figured out the problem. Microsoft released a new 365 version on July 6th - right about the time my problem started! (2206 build 16.0.15330.20230) - After some research, figured out how to use the Office Deployment Tool to roll back to the previous 365 version 2205 build 16.0.15225.20204 and no more memory errors.

it's not strange. some much smaller files will get this alarm too. they are with size of only a few KB. it may contain too much styles or you may disabled virtual memory (because you are proud of you large size of memory).
