We have a spreadsheet where we have completed an audit on whether leaners have completed a certain task.
Each Col is a task. Each row is a learner
Is there was way of creating a rule in a new cell so that, for example
5 ticks = green
3-4 ticks = yellow
2 or less = red?
Assuming the 'ticks' are a character of some sort then use Conditional Formatting and use a COUNTA() formula to count the number of non blank cells.

Do you have tick boxes associated with those cells or something else?
It really would be easier if you attached a sample workbook.
If you are using a letter in a cell (like Y), then an example CF rule for green would be:
=COUNTIF($A2:$E2,"Y")=5

i'll let you in to a secrete..... it's a google sheet that my colleague did you when I download an example, it doesn't have the tick boxes, just "true" or "false".
Are the tick boxes a google sheets thing?
Do you need this to work with Excel or Google Sheets? I have no idea about the latter.
Try this for your green rule:
=COUNTIFS(range,"true")=5
Again, a sample workbook would help us to help you ...
