    Can Excel calculate odds?

    Hi,

Hope this is not an off topic subject - Is there an excel function for calculating odds? I need to calculate the probability of hitting 5 balls in a 37 ball lottery where 6 balls are chosen.

Sorry if this is off topic (ducking under the desk)

    Thank you.

Yes, it can, but you'd need to know what the calculation would be and then convert it to a formula. There's nothing built into Excel that automatically deals with odds.

The only way I know how to state the calculation is how I described it. Should I try a maths forum instead? Thanks for the quick reply.

    Re: Can Excel calculate odds?

What you described is not a calculation. Yes, a maths forum is where you would normally ask how to CALCULATE odds. Once you know how that is done, you can bring the equation here and ask how it can be done with a formula.

If you get lucky, one of our experts who happens to be a maths guru may see this and help you out.

You'd better hope Mr Shorty sees this, but as I believe he's based Stateside, he may not be around for a few hours yet.

In the meantime, do a bit of homework: https://www.wikihow.com/Calculate-Odds

Thanks AliG but I will wait to see if Mr Shorty sees this post. I have a creative mind not a mathematical mind.

Not up for a challenge, then? I'm a linguist, however I'd have got stuck in and tried to work it out, but then that's just me. I like to keep my brain active. If I had time, I'd probably try to work it out for you, but sadly I don't today.

Mr Shorty is usually here mid to late afternoon my time - so in 3-4 hours' time, roughly.

Fantastic. Thanks a lot. Should have known there was a calculator like that (giving myself a facepalm).
