Excel File - Saving Takes Long Time

I chose the General Forum to post this question because I can't say with certainty what the cause of my problem is - it may span several separate forums. Help appreciated:

    My Excel .xlsm file:
    has 6 worksheets
    is 1.3mb in size
    contains multiple macros
has a pivot table and pivot chart on one worksheet summarising data held in an Excel table in another worksheet.
The file has NO links, queries or connections to other worksheets
Beyond that, it has no particularly unusual components.

When I save the file it takes 90 seconds to save, whatever the modification to the file. During that time excel status changes to "Excel not responding" and CPU usage increases to about 33%

For comparison, a larger file on my PC takes about 2 second to save.

I feel that there may be a corruption in the file but am asking you knowledgeable people whether you have ever experienced similar and could thus point me in a direction to research what is causing my problem.

    thanks in advance.

Re: Excel File - Saving Takes Long Time

    Hi, welcome to the forum.
My guess (reading your short description) is that there are quite some formulas in it or references that are being updated before saving.
For testing you could set calculation to manual before saving and see if that changes the time.
Another possibility is that the drive you're saving it to is a NAS or network drive and my experience with Microsoft is that it scans all the drives and the timeout for each drive is the 'bad guy'
The 'Excel is not responding' is a known 'feature' with the newest Excel versions starting with 2007. You see Excel has the application part and the workbook part. the Application is waiting for the workbook to finish (can be macro loops or more) and therefore displays that message. I fell for it when I was running my pre-2007 versions that worked perfectly and saw this.
I found out that you can just let it run and it completes
Back to your question: try turning off automatic calculation for starters as well as screen updating and events

Re: Excel File - Saving Takes Long Time

    Hi Keebellah
Thank you for your considered reply.
I will check out the suggestions about turning auto calculation off; there could be something in that.
I don't believe it is a network issue as I understand the file has been used both in a network and standalone environments
and in each case the result is the same, ie some 90 seconds to save the file.

Thinking through the suggestions, I can also check to see that there are no autosave macros running (I don't believe there are but no harm to check)
and I can also disassemble a test copy of the file by deleting one worksheet at a time until I can identify which worksheet (if any) is causing
the problem, and subsequently removing parts of that sheet. I may ultimately discover that the file is simply corrupted - I have come across
    this scenario before !

Thanks again, I will confirm what if anything works in due course.

Re: Excel File - Saving Takes Long Time

    Hi Keebellah
Well, it wasn't the autocalc, it seems that the issue was with the pivot chart.
I am still not convinced that the file was not corrupted. Nevertheless, when I (eventually) managed to delete the pivot chart and its associated pivot table, the duration of the save operation fell from 90 seconds to about 3 seconds. I rebuilt the pivot chart and table with some minor format modifications. The save time is now about five seconds, slightly longer than I would expect from a relatively small file but I think the problem is now resolved albeit I cannot say with precision what was causing it.
Thank you again for your advice; it set me in the right direction.

Re: Excel File - Saving Takes Long Time

Good to read this, even if it still puzzels me I guess the time difference is a gain, but ik must have got something to do with calculations or similar
    Anyway, for now it’s solved
