Why does Excel sometimes freeze when I go to MS Edge yet doesn't happen every time?

I use MS Excel 2016 and I often have several workbooks open at the same time. As well, I often have several pages open in MS Edge to check email of get information from other sites. Several times a day when I've been on the web and come back to Excel, I find that my Excel documents are frozen and I have to close out of all the workbooks and reboot Excel. Aggravating!

Does anyone know why this happens and is there a fix?

I would be so grateful for any help you might can offer.
