Adding custom icons to Conditional Formatting

So I do a lot of ranking and rather than waste a column for each and every category I was hoping to find a way to add numbers (rather than icons, arrows, lights, bars, etc) as the conditional formatting. So in the included example sheet I have columns with a variety of information with a corresponding column with the rank of each employee for the category. So what I'd want to do is find a way to do conditional formatting, either through taking the value in a cell or through creating a custom icon set (in this case, a set of numbers) and letting me add the rank as conditional formatting. So I created an example where I did it manually (what I'm trying to avoid) in column F.

I don't mind doing rank columns and the current set of icons from conditional formatting are fine but it would just be such a time and space saver, along with being more readable, to be able to put the rankings just in the cell with the value. Thanks before hand.

Not conditional formatting but is this what you are looking for in F2 and drag down?

It refer to column D only:

    =D2&" ("&RANK(D2,D$2:D$6)&")"

While not my ideal solution since it would actually create a 3rd column rather than shrink it down to one but I could hide the other two and effectively create it as one. It seems like there isn't an easy solution so this may be the best option, thank you both.
