Name of column not visible in cell references

If I name column A "StartDate" and then refer to cell A2, I would like the reference in the formula to look like "StartDate2" to make the formula more readable. But the reference remains "A2" as if the column didn't have a given name. Is there a way to make it happen? If not, what's the point with naming columns?

    I have Excel 2016.

Create a proper table and then you will get proiper table references based on your column headers (Insert > Table).
