do not run formulas unless commanded

Hi, is there a way to prevent the formulas in a spreadsheet from automatically updating, especially when the file is just opened, unless specifically given the ok?

for example, in workbook1-sheet1, I have formulas referencing cells in another workbook. Every time I open workbook1, all the cells with formulas have a #REF! because I haven't opened the other workbook yet. Is there a way for the workbook to open, but not run the formulas until I say to.

    thanks

    Yes.

Go to Formulas tab. And set calculation option to Manual.

Note that this setting will carry across workbooks.

No, excel files always calc on opening.

I suspect you are using formulas that require the linked file/s to be open, such as INDIRECT. Perhaps changing your formula may help, but we would need to see some samples to give better help.

To clarify, you can set to manual mode on new workbook then open other workbook from it.

As well, you can set if you want to update links on workbook open or not, in edit links option.

Edit: Tested using SUMIFS(), which does not work on closed workbook.
