Drop-Down List in a Worksheet that Can't be Edited

    Hi,

I have a worksheet with a drop-down box containing a list of product names that can be found elsewhere in the workbook.

I would like to edit the list by pointing it to a range of cells that contain a longer list of product names.

However, I can't see where the existing list of product names in the drop-down box is coming from: I went into Data Validation - Settings - List, but can't see a formula reference to a range of cells.

Can a drop-down box be created in a workbook other than with Data Validation? And can anyone please suggest how to edit the list of product names in the drop-down box?

I am unfortunately unable to post an example of this issue.

    Thanks!

If the dropdown list is in a cell, rather than a control (like a combobox) then it must use Data Validation. When you go to Data Validation - Settings - List, is the formula box blank? If it is not blank, what's there?

    The formula box is blank.

Not sure if this helps but next to the cell containing the drop-down box there a number (not a formula) that somehow changes when a different item is selected from the drop-down box?

    Thanks

Is the dropdown box a combobox rather than a cell? Do you have the Developer panel visible in your ribbon? If so, click on Design then right-click on the dropdown and tell me if it is selected as a control. If so that means it's a combobox, not a cell.

If so, it can be linked to the cell next door to cause the behavior you are describing.

This is very difficult to address without your file. Can you remove all the data from your file and then attach the blank version? If you do, be sure and point out where is the dropdown and which cell changes when an item it selected.

The paper clip icon does not work for attachments. To attach a file, under the text box where you type your reply click the Go Advanced button. On the next screen scroll down and click on Manage Attachments, which will show a pop-up window to Select and Upload a file. Then close the window.
