    Excel-64 bit

I would be grateful if anyone could tell me how to install only the Excel 64-bit component in place of Excel 32-bit version. I do not wish to convert any other of my Office programs over to 64-bit because they are known to cause problems when also running Retail technology CRM, Riskalyze, Morningstar Office, and MoneyGuide Pro, four proprietary cloud-based apps I use extensively.

    With kind regards,

    Re: Excel-64 bit

You can't mix 32-bit and 64-bit office installations. If you want 64 bit Excel, and you want the other Office applications on the same PC, then you must also install 64-bit versions of Office.

You could use a second PC, or a VM, to run a different version.

    Olly,
Thanks. A friend thought there was a way one could select which Office modules one could patch 64-bit, and I’m grateful that you clarified that I can’t. I also appreciate your suggestion to install 64 in a companion machine.

Just to confirm, I did a quick google search...

Finally, you cannot mix 32- and 64-bit versions of Office on the same system, although Office 2010 is the only edition that comes with 64-bit versions of any application (namely, Excel, which is the one most commonly used in its 64-bit incarnation).

    Re: Excel-64 bit

Thank you FDibbins - I appreciate your thoroughness.

The Excel file I'm trying to work on with my 32-bit version of Excel (Office 2010) is big, so big that it hangs up awaiting splwow64.exe to release. Eventually, it does (four hours or more), and I work with the file. I have suspended autosave, which helps lockups, and automatic formula calculation; Manual calculation also helps prevent lockups. I am not trying to use any print functions, as splwow64.exe might imply, I'm simply trying to work with the file. The file was about 33 MB, but I deleted several tabs which graphed content, and at 15 MB my beta file is 15 MB, and runs flawlessly, opens fast, saves fast, calculates fast, everything, just no graphs.

If I can't find a way to isolate and remove splwow64.exe from the equation, I might try creating a separate Excel file with only graphs, and instruct the data series to fetch its data from the smaller, flawlessly running 15 MB file. Ideas?

    With my thanks,

    Re: Excel-64 bit

You may try below to clear Spooler. This have worked for some (option 2).
    https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorial...ear-reset.html

But specifics will depend on set up. If your environment uses print server, you may need to check the server and update print driver.

Edit: You'll likely need to check and manually remove C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS & C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers content. Then reinstall drivers.

FYI - splwow64.exe should constantly run, since it's needed for 32bit program to communicate with 64bit OS to print, but should not be affecting anything when not printing. But queue/driver issue may cause memory issue.

    Re: Excel-64 bit

Jonathan, thanks for the kind words - always appreciated.

I would be curious to see what is making your so bloated in the 1st place?

What kind of formulas are you using?

With any "slow" file, there are a few things to check...
    1. click end/home and see where you end up. If it is nowhere near where you know where your data ends, start CAREFULLY deleting rows and columns till you get to where you now your data ends
    2. Check if you have any Conditional Formatting and see if the rules have doubled up (I have seen them repeated 3 and 4 times just in 1 cell)
    3. With both CF or Data Validation, check to make sure you are not using full rows/columns, try to restrict the ranges to just what you need - or 2-3 times what you think you will need.
    4. Check the same thing for any ARRAY formulas

For large files, Maybe try this...
    1. click end/home and see where the cursor lands.
2, if it is "out in the middle of nowhere", start to CAREFULLY delete rows and columns until you get back to the last row and column that you KNOW contains data
    3. Save the file under a different name (so you don't mess up the orig file)
    4. Close and re-open and see if that helped?

    Also...
for DV, make sure you are not referencing full-column/row ranges, use only the range you need.
Check for range names that :"grew" or that are no longer needed (some may have come across with the DV sheets)
