Help with "this or that" cell and time stamp.

    Hello everyone,

I am very new at Excel and had two questions.

1: How can I make it so that only one cell can contain data. For example: I want to set it up so that only cell H or I can contain data. If you put something in cell "I" than it should delete what's in cell H and visa versa.

2: I would also like it so that once something is entered into cell H or I; a date and time stamp would be put into cell J. So lets say in cell H I have my initials. If I then put my initials in cell "I" it would remove my initials from cell H and put a time stamp on when this was completed into cell J.

I hope this is all making sense and I appreciate any help anyone adds. I am very thankful this site exists.

    rogersjoe,

It's very difficult to interpret your goals without an example of what you are trying to achieve. Can you post a sample sheet, please. You can do this by clicking: Go Advanced>Manage Attachments>Upload File>Close Window>Post.

For example, a valid cell reference must contain a Row Number AND a Column Letter. When you say "Cell H" are you referring to a particular cell in Column H or a table of data that is validated by any value entered into a given row of Column H?

This would require VBA (macro). Formulas can only affect the cell they reside in, they cannot affect other cells - so they cant "delete" what is another cell.
The time stamp would also require VBA

Rogerjoe - please stop opening threads on this issue - all of your requests about date stamping need to stay here in this thread. Please do not ignore moderation requests in future. Your last thread on this, which did not post correctly owing to the wording of its title, has been deleted.
