Cells that I format as Currency automatically revert to Number on the first attempt

Whenever I try to format cells as Currency, it formats the cells as Number instead. If I try to format them as Currency again, it works on the second try.

This happens 99% of the time, and the other 1% of the time it works like it should but it seems to be completely random when it does work.

Does anyone know why this would happen?

Are you saying you pre-apply the formatting to blank cells, then when you type into them, the chosen formatting is ignored? Can you attached a sample workbook to see if others experience the same issue?

I've attached a sample file where this occurs.

The cells are already populated. The issue occurs when I try to reformat the cells as Currency. Even though I am very clearly choosing the Currency option from the list of formatting options, when I go back into the formatting window, it says it applied Number instead.

It always changes to Number on the first attempt, and always changes to Currency on the second attempt

How are you changing the format?
If I select Currency from the "Number" section on the "Home" tab, it works for me.

Thank you! I was right-clicking, choosing format cells, then selecting Currency, but your way is much faster and actually works fine.
