Want to change negative numerals to red type.

I have a column with positive numerals, and negative numerals denoted by a minus sign in front of them.

Would like to change all the negative numerals from the default black type to red type.

This must call for "Conditional Formatting" but I don't know how to use it for that.

You can include color in a custom number format code (or some of the built in number format codes -- especially in the Accounting group). The first example under "Review Guidelines for customizing a number format" shows an example where positive numbers are blue and negative numbers are red: https://support.office.com/en-us/art...2-09fab54be7f4

    Thank you for the response.

I would like negative numbers in a specific column to be red.

I don't understand the built-in codes it refers to, nor how to go about effecting the change.
Could you be more specific in an ELI5 sense please.

PS - Conditional Formatting won't do it? Seems that would be simpler if it works, although perhaps what you've proposed is simple and I'm just unaware of the procedure.

Tried "Highlight the column > Conditional Formatting > Highlight Cell Rules > Equal To" and put a - sign, but didn't work.

Re: Want to change negative numerals to red type.

How far through the help file did you look? The first section describes in great detail all of the different custom number format codes, followed by the second section which describes how to pull up the "format cells - number" dialog and enter a custom number format (link to second section here: https://support.office.com/en-us/art...fab54be7f4#bm2 ). If you are unfamiliar with using number formats to format numbers, I would suggest you spend some time with that to become familiar with number formatting. I would expect something like ctrl-1 (to bring up number format dialog -> Number -> Select number of decimal places -> click on one of the "red" numbers to specify red for negative numbers -> click on custom to see what the number format code looks like and change it if needed.

And, if you want, you can use conditional formatting, too, to do this. I would expect something like Home -> Conditional formatting -> New rule -> format cells that contain -> cell value less than or equal to 0 -> set format so that font color is red.

    Either approach should work.

go to the dropdown box for formatting cells, from the dropdown click more number formats then click on either number or currency. If you select number it should show in the list as as either showing negative numbers as red or one with parens around it and red. Same for currency and you can drop the currency sign. (which isn't that different than MrShorty's suggestion)
