Excel 2016 display problem on Win10 PC: blank/black cells with just a preview icon

I have a user with an unusual problem: Excel documents are showing with blank/black cells with a pixelated preview icon instead of the normal cell contents. (see picture attached)

    Computer info:
Windows 10 (10.0.15063), Dell Optiplex 7050 with built-in video card and 16GB of system memory, 64-bit Office 2016, McAfee enterprise anti-virus software.

The only thread I've found with a problem even remotely like this seems to be referencing 2007:
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com...orum=w7itproui

Other users in the department are still on Windows 7 and are not having this problem.
Is this strictly a Windows 10 problem? Am I missing a patch for Excel? Or a setting in Excel?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you

I've never seen that specifically, but have you tried disabling hardware acceleration in office? See -

Looks to me like there are a ton of embedded images in that file that cant load. Id say this is supported by being able to see some of the content on the sheet around the main area thats black.

Does this issue happen in brand new blank files you create?

If not then the contents of the file are the problem. The following advise may destroy data and content. I recommend doing it in a copy of a file(s) until you are sure it resolves your issue in an acceptable manner. You've been warned...

In the problem file go to the objects pane to see all the objects on a given sheet. If your profile is correct you are using XL2003. I wish I could be more helpful but I have long forgotten if and where this option is in that version. Essentially it lists in a pane all the objects on the sheet, allow you to show/hide and select them via the pane.

If you are able to find this feature then strip out the objects and see if the display issue is gone. If so the objects (some of them at least) are to blame and your best course of action is likely to remove and replace them.

It seems counter intuitive to turn off hardware acceleration, doesn't it? But I'll give it a shot.
Do you know if the Group Policy option listed in that document is the same functionality as checking the box in the Options of Excel? Do they perform the same function? Or is one better than the other?
    Thank you

My understanding is those cells are not images, they're formulas.
    And we're using Office 2016.
    Thank you

EDIT: Updated info from the user.
Are there pictures or images in the cells?
No, there are no images or pictures in the cells with the icons. Only formulas or hardcode data.
The formulas are not referencing other documents, either.

Do all of your Excel documents look like this?
All spreadsheets look like this when this error occurs. So a new document would not look like this.
But once she opens a document and it looks like this, then all documents look like it.
