"Stacked box chart" with tooltip that reveals underlying data

    Hello,

Please see the attached spreadsheet. It has sample data and an example of the chart that I'd like to create.

For lack of better expression, I'm calling it a stacked box chart, because it's different than the standard stacked column chart. Please note the tooltip that shows the project data when hovered over any box.

How in the world do I create this? Can anyone help me get started?

    Thanks!

    Jay

    Hello Excel Jeddi Knights!

Does anyone have an idea or approach that might help me out here? Could someone get me started on the chart, even if the tooltip is a "bridge too far"?

Thanks to all & have a great day!

    Jay

Your chart looks like a somewhat basic "stacked column" chart, so that's where I would start.

I find that a lot of charting questions are really about how to get the data in the spreadsheet. I don't see the needed data in the spreadsheet (count of each type by month), so the first step in creating the chart is going to be getting the needed data. I used a pivot table (intro to pivot tables if needed: http://www.excel-easy.com/data-analy...ot-tables.html ):
    1) Add suitable column headers (row 4) to table.
    2) Insert pivot table and tell it to:
2a) use month as row labels
2b) use type (column C) as column labels
2c) use "count of type" as value field.
    3) I note that you want the fields ordered with automotive on the bottom and aerospace on the top (default is to sort alphabetically), so I manually moved the aerospace column last. (https://support.office.com/en-us/art...f-24430830450a )
    4) Insert stacked column chart using the pivot table output.

I don't know if that is exactly what you want, but it illustrates one possible approach. Basically there are two things you need to do: summarize the data in the spreadsheet, then create the chart. From what I usually see, the harder part is creating the summary data in the spreadsheet. If that part is done well, then creating the chart is usually easy.

    Does that help?
