    Drop Down Box Problem

    G'day

I have a problem with drop down boxes in that when I select the arrow the selection window stays open for about 2-3 seconds and then closes on its own. I don't have time to make the selections I need.

Same issue whether it is a filtered list or a pivot table selection box but not with a data validation list.

It isn't spreadsheet specific as I have tried it on a large spreadsheet which has lots of tables and pivot tables etc and also tested on a spreadsheet with just a list of four cells with the same issue.

Problem has arisen in last day so can't understand what is going on. Don't think anything has changed.

It isn't an issue with my mouse as I have tried it with another mouse. Don't think it is a memory issue as restarted PC.

Running Excel 2010 on Windows 7.

    Thanks for any tips.

No definitive answer for this, but other things to try are to boot into safe mode and see what happens (implies some app is affecting it) or to try a different keyboard (although if you had a sticky key I would think you would see other issues).

    Hey Ricky,

Do you have any macros behind the worksheets that this happens in? Can we eliminate some macro event doing this?

It sounds like something (some other program) is trying to get access to the CPU and this might be turning off your selection. Can you go to the task manager and stop other programs running to see which one is hogging the keyboard buffer? Do you have multiple screens where the focus is transferring back and forth and this is causing the problem?

Like Pauleyb, I have no answer for this without you trying to discover what it is on your own. I'd hate to see you have to reinstall Excel again (after uninstalling it?) to reset all your defaults. OH Yeah - it might be something in your Advanced Settings in Excel (like speak is turned on?)??
One test is worth a thousand opinions.

This is not exactly what you describe. It sounds similar enough to consider.

    Hey Ricky,

Dave has found some threads where DropBox may be doing this. Can you press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to get to your Task Manager and find DropBox and disable it. Then go back to Excel and see if the bad behavior continues?

    Hi Ricky,

You can save you workbook in excel 97-2003 mode. It may work but I can't assure you 100%.

    Thanks

    Re: Drop Down Box Problem

Wow - that's amazing. Dropbox is the culprit. Thanks Dave for the link to the other thread. I have set the Dropbox badge to never show and voila - problem solved!!!

Incidentally I was having a similar problem in Word in that when I selected a block of text and hold it then it would just unselect after a second or so.

Thanks to all you guys - stars all round - if I could give you ten each I would. This forum rocks.

    Cheers
    Rick
