Linking into Word, symbol formatting

Hi, I am linking tables from Excel 2010 into Word 2010 and I am losing formatting while doing so after linking. In my Excel sheet, I have cells which contain both symbols and Times New Roman Characters. For example, in one cell I have the symbol lambda, followed by "b". Once I link this into Word (Link and Keep Source Formatting), and update the link, it now reads lambda and beta - 2 symbols. If I re-open Excel, I see the correct symbol lambda, followed by "b". How can I get Word to keep the same format as native Excel sheet when linking?

When I do the same thing (also using Office 2010), I get Λb or λb, as appropriate, in Word, not Λβ or λβ.
