Covert yyyy-mm-dd text to mm-dd-yyyy date?

This is so simple yet I am failing over and over.

I export some data from one of our work systems and it has dates in a couple of the columns but since it is an exported CSV file there is no formatting.

I need these to be seen as dates so I can use conditional formatting for things within 30 days.

Actually the end format doesn't matter it just needs to be seen as a date. Just setting them to date format didn't work of course.

Maybe if column A has the text date.

Formula:

=VALUE(A1)

and format the column with the formula as date

I will try that. One of the first things I tried was pasting values and then formatting as date but I don't think it worked

Edit:

Actually it did work...add oddly enough it looks like the date conditional formatting was working with the text formatted dates anyway..which I don't understand!?
