    Corrupt file

Hi all. Just wondering if anyone can help. I've been sent a file by a colleague that is throwing up a corrupt error message when you open it. It will ask to repair it first but then gives another message saying that the workbook cannot be opened or repaired because it is corrupt.

I have tried all of the solutions and fixes online that I could find to try and repair or open the file and nothing seems to work with it (mostly seems to be for if the repair doesn't work automatically but not for when that fails). Have also tried linking the data out into a new workbook but this didn't work either.

Does this mean that the file is completely gone? Or are there other options once the basics have been tried?

    Cheers for any help
    Karl

Here are a few suggestions obtained from the Net:

    RESTORE CORRUPT FILE

    Restoring a Corrupted File
This is the reply from one of members re restoring a corrupted file

The techs at Microsoft were able to restore the Excel file!

I'm not sure what all they did (some of it was magic, evidently), but here's a tip they passed along.

If you're having a problem with an Excel file, save it as HTML (which is one of the file types in Excel), then save it back to .xls

They say that will often recover lost information, or restore a corrupt file.

Another way of restoring broken/corrupted Excel files
I've been quite lucky actually opening corrupted files in OpenOffice, saving them, and then re-opening them in Excel. Sometimes the formatting will be a little off, but the data is almost always recovered, as well as most of the formatting. Unfortunately, not all of the formula and charts are, but when it happened I was happy anything was salvaged at all :-)

    Re: Corrupt file

    Hi,karl-eQ

The Excel xlsx file is actually a zip archive containing one main workbook.xml file and several supplemental files. You can find more detailed information about the Excel xlsx file format by searching on Google with the keyword “Excel xlsx file format”. If the archive file is corrupt, or the main items in the archive are damaged or corrupted, then you will not be able to open the file correctly with Excel. In such a case, the first step is to try to use the built-in repair or recovery function in the Excel, to see if it can repair or recover the corrupt file. If not, then you need to resort to a third-party Excel repair software to scan the corrupted file and recover Excel data for you. It is also possible to find a data recovery expert or company to do the task, but in most of the cases, they will also use a third-party tool to do the recovery for you.

The main difference between using the software by yourself and by a third-party service company is:
    (1) The company is familiar with the data recovery industry so he knows which software is the best one. While you need to search and compare the software online by yourself, which is time-consuming.
    (2) The company purchases the software for multiple usages, while you purchase the software for one-time usage only. So normally the service fee may be cheaper than the license fee for the software.
    (3) DIY will keep your data confidential while do the recovery via a company may cause data breach.

If you want to perform a DIY recovery, then you can try the following methods:

    1. First of all, you can try to repair the file manually in Excel, as follows:

    (1) On the File menu, click Open.
    (2) In the Open dialog box, select the file you want to open, and click the arrow next to the Open button.
    (3) Click Open and Repair, and then choose which method you want to use to recover your workbook.

You may find more information about this at:

    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/excel-help/repairing-corrupted-files-in-excel-HA001034656.aspx (for Excel 2003)
    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/ex...017.aspx?CTT=1 (for Excel 2007)
    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/excel-help/repairing-a-corrupted-workbook-HA010342840.aspx?CTT=1 (for Excel 2010)
    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/ex...554.aspx?CTT=1 (for Excel 2013)

    2. If method 1 fails, there are still several methods to recover your Excel file manually with Excel, including writing a small VBA macro, as below

    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/ex...#_Toc337637262

    3. If all above methods do not work, then you can try DataNumen Excel Repair at:

    https://www.datanumen.com/excel-repair/

I have used the tool in the past and it helps recovering some valuable data for me. The tool has a free demo so that you can try to see if it works on your file or not before you buy.

Hope this will help. Good Luck!

To repair corrupt Excel file, you can try following solutions:

    1. Open and Repair - Open MS Excel and Select the corrupt file. Click on Open and Repair option and follow the instructions.

    2. Delete COM Add-Ins - Under Add-Ins section, try to delete COM Add-ins and then try to open your file.

    3. If you can't open the file then Set the calculation option to manual. Click File > Options. In the Formulas category, under Calculation options, pick Manual, and then click OK

    Re: Corrupt file

    Hi,

I am glad to assist you.

There are possible causes for this error.

If you’re using an unsupported Excel file format or maybe the file is corrupted due to sudden power off. And when opening an older version of the excel file in a new version on MS Office, this error may occur.
And here are the solutions you can use to solve the error:

Solution 1: Change the default file format.
    • Try changing the Excel default file format by following these steps:
    • In Excel 2010 and newer versions, click on the File menu.
    • In the Info screen that appears, click on Options.
    • In the ‘Excel Options’ window, under the Save workbooks section, click on the Save files in this file format: drop-down. Select a file format (i.e., the one supported by your Excel version).
    • Click OK.

Check if you can open your Excel file. If not, try the next solution.

Solution 2: Edit the excel file permissions
Follow these steps to change the file permissions and see if it fixes the problem:
    • Right-click on the file that won’t open and click Properties.
    • In the file properties dialog box, click the Security tab and then hit the Edit button.
    • When the file’s permissions dialog box appears, click on the Add button.
    • Click on the Advanced button from the ‘Select Users or Groups’ window.
    • Select Find Now. A list of all users and groups will get displayed in a search results box. Choose Everyone group from the list and hit OK.
    • You can see the ‘Everyone’ group in the ‘Enter the object names to select’ textbox. Click OK once again to return to the file’s permission dialog box.
    • Click Everyone from the Group or user names: box and check all the checkboxes under Allow.
    • Click on Apply and then OK.

Now try to open the Excel file.

    I hope this will help.

    Thanks,
    Alice
