Ctrl + click + drag multiple times will no longer allow me to merge separate rows of cells

I've been creating checklists in Excel and up until yesterday I've been able to merge multiple groups of multiple cells, and suddenly now I cannot. I can select the groups of cells no problem, but it will only merge the last group of cells that I selected, instead of applying the merge to the other groups. Help!!!

Do you mean you are selecting cells in different rows, at the same time, and then trying to merge them into a single group? You can only merge cells in a contiguous rectangle--you can't merge cells from different rows. Maybe I don't know what you mean by "merge multiple groups of multiple cells". Can you give a specific example of which cells you are selecting at one time but can't merge?

They are in the same row. For example:

I select A1 through D1, then Ctrl + click and select A2 through D2, then Ctrl + click and select A3 through D3, etc.

When I try to merge them, it will only merge the last group that I selected. It still shows rows 1 and 2 highlighted, but it won't merge them.

When I follow your steps I cannot get them to merge at all. I don't know why not. I am using Excel 2016 and Office 365 may work differently.

But I can get the desired results by clicking A1 and dragging to D3, then merging.

I'm not trying to merge all of the cells together. I'm trying to merge A1 through D1 and merge A2 through D2, and so on.

I am guessing that capability is unique to 365 because I've never seen that before and it doesn't work on Excel 2016. Excel 2016 only groups the last set. I cannot explain why it used to work, and now does not.

In Excel 2010, if you select three areas and merge, it merges each of the areas independently.

shg, I tried that in 2013 and it didn't merge anything, and I tried it in 2016 and it merged only the bottom area.

Curious. Doesn't seem like something that would be deliberately changed.

hantutt, I'm having this issue also. I know that it worked in both 2010 and 2013 because I've been doing exactly what you describe for years, and just recently it stopped working. It now only merges the last set of cells selected. I don't even think that it's a 365 issue because I've been using that for several months now and I'm relatively sure the issue cropped up more recently than that.

I don't have a solution, but I wanted to chime in that this is not an isolated incident and I am also interested in an answer. It is very frustrating that this no longer works.

I am having the same issue and it is driving me crazy.
Format painter isn't always the best option because often I have text in the second cell, so I really need this to work!
