    Problem with complicated iterative calculations

    Hi all,

I am working on this excel tool for some scientific calculations. On sheet 1, I have a variable (say X) which is used to compute other variables (say A,B,C). On another sheet, I have another variable (Y) which is calculated from (A,B,C and some other CONSTANTS). This Y is eventually used to calculate X. I am running this iteration loop which works fine giving me a value of X. The problem arises whenever any change is made in the value of the constants or sometimes anywhere in the sheet, all the cells included in the iteration loop start giving the #VALUE! error although every formula stays the same. I have to somtimes, either retype the formula to make the values appear again but its really annoying. Any help in this regard would be HIGHLY appreciated.

    Good Day !

Re: Problem with complicated iterative calculations

Will you please attach a sample Excel workbook? We are not able to work with or manipulate a picture of one.

    1. Make sure that your sample data are REPRESENTATIVE of your real data. The use of unrepresentative data is very frustrating and can lead to long delays in reaching a solution.

    2. Make sure that your desired solution is also shown (mock up the results manually).

    3. Make sure that all confidential data is removed or replaced with dummy data first (e.g. names, addresses, E-mails, etc.).

    4. Try to avoid using merged cells as they cause lots of problems.

Unfortunately the attachment icon doesn't work at the moment, so to attach an Excel file you have to do the following: just before posting, scroll down to Go Advanced and then scroll down to Manage Attachments. Now follow the instructions at the top of that screen.

Please pay particular attention to point 2 (above): without an idea of your intended outcomes, it is often very difficult to offer appropriate advice.

Re: Problem with complicated iterative calculations

I cannot recreate the problem. I can edit B5 and C5 (sheet2) to use 6 or 60 or 600 (B5) and 10000 or 1000 or 100 and I do not get any error values. Naturally, I can trigger a div/0 error by changing either denominator to 0, then I need to edit D5 to reset the loop in that cell. If I make one of those denominators positive and the other negative, then I get errors related to trying to take the square root of a negative number.

I am not sure what other changes you are making that trigger these errors. Can you provide examples of changes/edits you are making that cause the cells to return errors?
