I have a sheet shared with members of my organization that doesn't function properly when multiple filters are selected in the pivot tables. I unchecked allow multiple filters in the pivot table options but the filters still show up as check marks. I also unchecked Display field captions and filter dropdowns from the pivot options and that didnt work either.
I don't know what your ultimate end is for limiting pivot tables to one selection, but here is one possible work around. Suppose you wish to limit the selection of an ID to a single selection.
Create a pivot table with the ID as the column header. This will give you a unique list of IDs. Overlay this with a named dynamic range. Then use the range to drive a Data Validation dropdown list.
Develop the pivot table with the ID as a filter. Hide the filter cell if you wish.
Now lock everything down except for the dropdown list. Put a Sheet_Change event on the filter. This event will unlock the sheets that contain pivot tables. Set the cell containing the filter on the pivot table to target.value. Refresh the pivot table. Lock all sheets again.
One spreadsheet to rule them all. One spreadsheet to find them. One spreadsheet to bring them all and at corporate, bind them.
A picture is worth a thousand words, but a sample spreadsheet is more likely to be worked on.
