Cell will not hyperlink to PDF file, display box opens "Cannot open the specified file"

Hello,

I am inserting a lot of hyperlinks for PDF files into an excel document. When I go to the insert tab, click hyperlink, find the file I'm looking for, and select it as the hyperlink, a display box opens with, "Cannot open the specified file." This only happens to some of the PDF documents.

I've tried to find code to just use the formula hyperlink and i've tried

=HYPERLINK(DRIVENAME:\\Folder\Folder\Folder\Filename) but that will not work either

Can you open it without a hyperlink?

Do the problematic file names have a pound sign (#) in them?

Hi shg:

Is there a workaround to the # issue? It sounds pretty weird that # should cause hyperlinks to not work.
