    Locating External Link error

I have an excel doc that has several tabs. When opening the doc it gives me an error that I have a bad link. Do you know the easiest way to locate the cell that is drawing the error "Error: Source not found". I don't want to break the link without looking at the individual cell. excel 2007

    Re: Locating External Link error

I don't know of any easy way to locate only broken links.

There's some VBA code posted in another thread (post 16 here: http://www.excelforum.com/excel-gene...sources-2.html) which you can run to have all external links listed on a new sheet, but it doesn't show if those links are valid or not, so if you've got lots of links you'd then have to check through all the results.

An alternative, but much more labour-intensive method would be to narrow the search down a bit by deleting one sheet at a time (using a copy of your file, not the original!) and checking if the error still shows up. Once you know which sheet it's on, you can then selectively delete rows (or columns) to find it. This will be much more difficult if you've got more than one broken link though.

Sorry I can't be more help.

I recently started a new job so am a bit busy and may not reply quickly. Sorry - it's not personal - I will reply eventually.
If your problem is solved, please go to 'Thread Tools' above your first post and 'Mark this Thread as Solved'.
If you use commas as your decimal separator (1,23 instead of 1.23) then please replace commas with semi-colons in your formulae.
You don't need to give me rep if I helped, but a thank-you is nice.

External link error, the compiler has not able to find the function definitions. You have to use the coding programs to find out the external link errors.

This VBA tool will find all links and test them for validity, giving a report on which ones are bad. Start out with your target file closed. Press the button, then you will get a dialog box to select the target file. I haven't used it for a while, so feel free to post if you have questions.

mrteater, is your thread really SOLVED? I just noticed that you had marked it SOLVED before I posted a solution.
