Have column of names in "O" and a column of names in "P". I want to sort the names in "P" only. Currently, when I select those and sort, it wants to do "O" also.
This has to be such a simple thing that I am simply overlooking....

If you are doing the sort via the menu tab at top DATA / SORT, when it asks if you want to expand the selection, ignore.
It isn't asking me though
Strange.
You are first highlighting all of the rows in the column that you want to sort ?
If it's not asking you after that, something wrong with Excel.
If your data in column "O" & "P"
Suppose your data from "P2:P10"
>Select range "P2:P10",
>Go & click on Sort
>Select "continue with the current selection"
>Click on "sort"
>select as per your requirment order ascending or descending
>click on "ok"
Or you required "Filtering" name start with "P" only.

Yes. I am Data is O3:O10, P3:P15. So I highlight P3:P15 only and click sort, and it sorts the O3:O10 as well. No option to continue with current selection
Once you select P3:P15 are you choosing 'Sort & Filter' > 'Custom Sort'? (Home tab) I am using ver. 2010 and when I choose 'Custom Sort' I get a choice of 'Expand selection' or 'Continue with current selection'.

I do not do custom sort. I do the right click - sort, or the sort/filter and click there.
When I did the custom, it still wanted to highlight all.
Highlight the columns you want to be sorted, then go to the Data tab, then click on filter. You should see little arrows pointing down appear next to your column headers, click on those to choose how you want it filtered and it should not affect other areas of the spreadsheet. You can also see the link to show you how to filter your stuff

The data is in a table? if so then you can not sort only column P
