Minutes being displayed as a date.

In cell j1 I have the number 36:04:00. This represents 36 mins and 4 seconds. I went to get averages j1:j17 and the numbers did not make any sense. So I decided to make a helper column in cell ak1. I thought ok lets just get the minutes and ignore the seconds so a simple =left(j1,2) should work. It did not and gave me the answer of 1. which does not help any. I tried several things such as changing to text/numbers/text to columns etc... Hoping someone could take a minute and resolve my issue and help me extract 36 mins a 4 seconds in a usable way.

Thank you for any help. I would normally make a excel workbook but I have feeling it is not necessary here.

    Shouldn't
    36:04:00
    Be displayed as:

    00:36:04
to be minutes and seconds ?

    Change 36:04:00 to 00:36:04:

    =J1/60
