Trouble with Excel borders and how they appear on the page and print

I frequently use a web site where I export a table of data into Excel format. Please see the first tab of the attached workbook for a sample of the export. Excel sees this as an htm file but I save it as xlsx.

The weird thing is that when I try to insert a few rows at the top to add a title, Excel will print the borders (gridlines) for the two rows above. See the second tab of the attached spreadsheet shows my attempt to do this.

When you print preview (ctrl-p) you will see those pesky borders. How can I get rid of these?

When I try highlight the whole sheet and choose "no borders," then all of the gridlines on the entire sheet disappear! See the third tab of the attached file for what I mean.

How do I show the gridlines on my screen, yet not print them out?

Thanks in advance for your help.
