Conditional formatting based on text and using the Max command

Ok so here is my problem. I do the statistics for my dart league and I want to highlight on our totals page the male and female with the highest allstar points. the problem is I don't want to have 2 gender lists. I have tried using the AND function as well as Index and Match but none of them seem to work for what I want to do. I'm not even sure why the AND function isn't working with the MAX function. It makes sense in my head so it must work right???

Hi and welcome. it helps if you attach your spreadsheet.

You'll need two rules one for male and one for female.

see the attached where I used the following CF formula

=B1=MAX(IF($A$1:$A$5="female",$B$1:$B$5,0)) use"male" for the second formula
