Add Text To End Of Text Already In Entire Column of Cells

I'm trying to take a single string of text and add it to the end of the text in every cell within an entire column. There is use of semicolons and slashes in the text but never any spaces. I've searched and experimented a lot but haven't been able to find this. Any help is much appreciated.

If your data start in A1, and the text you want to add is in B1, use this in C1 and copy down:

    =A1&$B$1

Then copy column C and paste values over column A. Delete Columns B & C. Done.

Thanks very much! One more thing. The first part worked perfect. However, the values in Column A, in my case, have variations from one cell to another. After copying and pasting like you suggested, it only pastes the text that I wanted to originally add to all cells in Column A, instead of adding on the text to what was already in the cell.

I'm confused (not uncommon). Please explain, by using examples, exactly what you want to do.

No worries and thanks for the help. It's not uncommon that I'm unclear when I speak/type either! When I went to provide the example with screen shots, I actually tried a different way and it worked. Instead of using your last example and copying column C and pasting it over A, I copied the cell that I performed the function in (C) and then pasted it through the rest of the C column and it gave me the result I was looking for. Here are the screen shots.

    Your first instructions:
    Excel Help 1.JPG

What happens with the second part of your instructions (copying Column C and Pasting over A) I think you recommended that because I wasn't clear about what I wanted to do:
    Excel Help 2.JPG

What I did instead, which was what I do with the formulas I know how to use:

I'm sure my initial request was probably unclear but you definitely answered my question accurately. Thank you VERY much.

I do have one more question if you or anyone else wouldn't mind. When you delete the 2 rows after you've established the formula and the correct values, how do I delete the previous columns with the values that the formula used without it not know what to reference anymore? In other words, how do I make it non-dependent of those 2 columns to still read correct?

    Image 1: fine.

Image 2: copy the formula right down to the bottom of column A's data.

Image 3: Copy and paste VALUES as stated - not just paste. Click the down arrow at the bottom of the paste box in HOME and select the first paste values ico.

Post 6: When you paste values, you are pasting the value ie xyz12345, not the formula that made it i.e. =xyz & 12345.

I see, and this worked. Thanks very much. I didn't realize the different paste functions. I tried doing this again with the actual data I need to work with and it's not working. I don't know what the difference is between the example I provided and what I'm trying to do but it's not working with the actual data. I'd post the spreadsheet but I can't even figure out how to attach. I see the attach button, but it doesn't allow me to attach anything. I'll try to figure that out too I guess.

To attach a sheet, you IGNORE the attach button (logical, eh??). Just before you post, scroll down and you'll see "Go advanced". click. scroll down to "Manage attachments" and then it's pretty easy to complete the job.

Thanks for that. Amateur forum user I guess. Here is the file I'm working with. The actual values are on the left, original example columns on the right. You can see I was able to duplicate the sample, but on the same sheet, something doesn't work with the actual data.

    This is what you need:

    In C1 coped down =A$1&B1

    In F1 copies down =D1&E$1

That did it, thank you. What is the general rule with the "$" placement?

$ locks that part of the cell reference:

$A1 - the A bit is locked, but 1 will increment

A$1 - the 1 is locked and will not increment

$A$1 - locks the entire reference (will not change as you copy across and down
