Who owns a project I hired help for?

I used an online site this week and hired a freelancer for an Excel project. Upon completion it was sent to me, locked with a password on some VBA macros and objects.
I asked for and was given the password without issue but it got me thinking and wondering -

If someone is commissioned to complete a project, who owns it?

I guess (and i do mean guess), that would depend on what the contract laid out?

For instance, with many companies, whatever inventions/programs/etc an employee comes up with, belongs to that company, because that is what their contract says.
1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)
2. If your question is resolved, mark it SOLVED using the thread tools
3. Click on the star if you think someone helped you

A waste of time post from me earlier FDibbins.
I was referring specifically to sites like the one I used, upwork. I didn't think things were so formal with it. But it was actually just another "Doesn't read the fine print" moment.
I went back to the site and sure enough there was a contract, a fairly lengthy one at that.
And in a nutshell, on that site, the client has 100% ownership, as long as the freelancer has been paid in full.
Good to know. But shoulda looked before I asked!
