Can you permanently break link between worksheet and copy ?

I'm having difficulty severing the links between a worksheet copied from one workbook to another.

Whatever I do, the copy retains knowledge of the workbook it was copied from. The edit link button highlights and no matter how many times I choose the "Break Links" option nothing appears to change. This is a problem because I get an error whenever I try to update the drop down menu list names.

Error reads "You may not use references to other workbooks for Data Validation criteria". The Data Validation lists names are the same in both workbooks, but why does the copy insist on thinking it's referring to the name in the old workbook and not the new one?

    Hi,

Check any range names. Sometimes these are linked to an external workbook.
Similarly check for any Macro buttons which may contain a reference to an external workbook.

Post back if you're still struggling and upload the workbook.

I did an Find/Replace and there are no references to the old workbook. I then tried changing all formula = signs to zzz before copying to new workbook then changing back to = after copying. Made no difference. Edit Link button still highlights and shows old workbook as source. Break Links does nothing, and Data Validation still produces error.

Did you look in Name Manager?

You might also try FindLinks by Excel MVP Bill Manville.

Re: Can you permanently break link between worksheet and copy ?

I know this thread ended ages ago, but I recently figured this out and thought I'd share the solution. Instead of going to Edit Links and then breaking the links, I went to Edit Links and then Updated links. I selected the workbook I was in for each of the links back to the workbook the worksheet was copied from and that resolved the issue. The data validation error message went away. Links no longer appear in my workbook.
