Excel 2007 closes without prompting to save

Hello,
The issue I am having is a persistent, yet intermittent problem of Excel 2007 closing without prompting to save.
I've been having trouble with this for some time and finally decided to reach out for some help. There are several things I have attempted that I should mention. The file I am using is a simple spreadsheet with no macros that I am aware of. I have tried rebooting my PC and the problem will be fixed for a few days perhaps. I have fixed it by doing a "repair" of the software in the Control Panel & have also tried a "repair" off the original disk. These will usually bring back the "save" prompt when closing, but in a short time it will suddenly begin closing again with no prompt to save, and all changes are lost. What else can I try?

I have this same problem with all the versions of Excel I use.

It didn't always do this so I'm guessing that some update caused it.

It happens very infrequently but happens nonetheless.

A recent update broke Excel 2002 in that I can't insert any ActiveX controls. MS no longer supports Excel 2002 so I'm SOL!
