    Time not formatted

I have a spreadsheet that was generated from a time logging program. It tracks badging times for employees. One of those columns is the actual time. The number is aligned to the left in the cell and excel is not recognizing it as time. Even if i highlight the cell and format it as time. The only thing that works is if I double click the cell then hit enter. Then the time shifts to align to the right of the cell (excel recognizing it as time). Any one know a work around so I dont have to double click and hit enter on 4672 cells?

    Re: Time not formatted

Highlight that column, click on Data | Text-to-columns, then click Finish.

    Hope this helps.

    Re: Time not formatted

Your program provides the data in text format. In Excel, it is treated as text until you edit the cell (i.e., double click and hit ENTER), then Excel reinterprets it as a date.

Here is one method for doing the conversion for a lot of cells at once.
    1. In any blank cell, type the value 1. Make sure the cell you typed 1 in is formatted as a number.
    2. Select the cell in which you typed 1, and Copy
    3. Select the cells with the values that you want to convert to numbers.
    4. Select Paste Special. Then under Operation, click Multiply and then click OK.

Edit: Thanks Pete, never knew about that one.
