    Hyperlink Error HTTP/1.0 404

    Hello all,

I am trying to create a Hyperlink to the new MapQuest website, and am running into the following error: "Unable to open http://{website}. The internet site reports that the item you requested could not be found. (HTTP/1.0 404)"

An example URL is as follows: http://mapq.st/1OZiQCE

Here is a link to my Public Dropbox containing the above example URL in a workbook: https://www.dropbox.com/s/6mjo00iwkj...rror.xlsx?dl=0

I have emailed MapQuest asking for their help, and they gave me the basic run-around on how to create a link to a map and insert it into Excel. If that didn't work, then they advised me to contact Microsoft.

If you have any suggestions or ideas on what is causing this error, please let me know what steps I can take to either fix the error, or work around it.

    Thanks!

=HYPERLINK("http://www.mapquest.com","Mapquest") will get you to the MapQuest website but the exact page that you want will not be directly addressed.

    Thanks for the reply, newdoverman.

I am looking to link to a specific map from Excel, not link to the main website, which is why I provided the example above.

Also, both inserting a hyperlink for 'http://www.mapquest.com/' & utilizing the formula you posted above creates a link which takes me to the classic website, and not the new website.

If you have any further insights into what exactly is causing the error, please let me know.

Excel's hyperlink and the getting of data from external sources facilities, in my experience, do not accept URLs that are dynamically produced by the websites in question.

From what my experiments at this end indicate, the hyperlink in Excel is using the local Regional Settings for location to redirect the hyperlink to what is designed for the local area. I get different results from Excel and my web browser using the exact same URL. This seems to be a quirk of Excel.

Thanks for the more detailed answer. I suspected an answer along those lines. Were you able to get either URL to take you to the new website? If so, I wonder if I could change my local settings to get it to work..

The hyperlink that you gave would always go to one site then re-direct to the new one. If I just entered www.mapquest.com in my browser it would go directly to the new site. Weird stuff I think.

I don't know what settings you would have to change to in order to get to the new site directly. Sites can be hosted anywhere.
