Cell Will Not Change Format Until Double Clicked

This is crazy, but I suspect there is a setting or something causing it

In column "A" I have dates in a format of mm/dd/yyyy
Now, for example, I have copied a date value of 8/26/2015 3:39:49 PM to cell A1
And this is how the data shows in cell A1
And it stays that way until I double-clip the cell, and THEN it displays as
8/26/2015 in cell A1 but in the formula bar it displays as 8/26/2015 3:39:49 PM

So now the problem here is, if I copy over to column A a bunch of dates in the format of 8/26/2015 3:39:49 PM 3:39:49 PM ,
I have to double click on each cell in column "A" to get the format that I want which is 8/26/2015

This is crazy, what causes this?

If you widen the column and restore Excel's default horizontal formatting ("General"), I expect the date appears left-aligned in the cell, no?

The dates are stored as text. Select the column, change the format to whatever you like, then Data > Text to columns, Finish.

Re: Cell Will Not Change Format Until Double Clicked

I have a similar problem. The above process works but it is not persistent. I have to do this every time I open the file. If it was just me, that would not be a problem, however this spreadsheet is going to be shared with several coworkers and I can't expect them (nor do I want them) to do this each time they open this file. Is there a way to make this persistent?

Here is what I am doing:

I have a row of data: Manufacturer, Vendor, Part Number, Description, Aisle, Bay, Shelf.

That data is concatenated into a single, multiline value:

    Part #: "Part Number"
    Description: "Description"
    Location: "Aisle"/"Bay"/"Shelf"
    Manufacturer: "Manufacturer"
    Vendor: "Vendor"

That cell is then used to create a url that will uses a website to create a QR code of the data.

    ="https://api.qrserver.com/v1/create-qr-code/?size=150x150&data="&"Concatenated Cell Reference"

That cell is then used with the =IMAGE function to return the QR code to the spreadsheet.

This works great except I have to use the "Text-To-Columns fix" every time the file is opened. I would like to find a way to make this persistent (without VBA) so that the QR codes populate upon opening the file instead of getting a #FIELD! error and then having to run the Text-To-Columns on the column every time.

Thanks in advance for any possible help.
