Formatting gone

Hi all,

So I have this workbook with 6-7 sheets.

Each page has loads of formatting, cell formatting, fill colors, borders, that sort of thing.

It all looks good but no matter what I do, every time I save it and re-open it, all the formatting is gone and the cells have reverted back to plain text.

I've done some searching but I can't find anything. I even recreated the whole workbook and it did the same thing.

Are you, by any chance, saving it as a CSV file or any other file format that is not Excel (i.e. xls, xlsx, xlsm or xlsb)?

I'm using Office 2010 and saving as an office 97-2003 xls file.

This is a template that I made a year ago and have updated once a week since, it has always been fine but just this week it has started happening.
