    Reserved names in Excel

Let say I select cell A1 and type in name box "RS" without quotes ja then press enter it accept name to range in Excel 2010 English version. But if I do same in Finnish langue version it don`t accept?
Is there any way to get reserved names in Excel in different language versions?

I known basic rules for those but why not accept RS but accept RT as well RU?

    Hi

You cannot use a name equal to a reference, like A1, AB56, Etc.

If you have the English version of excel you cannot us RC because it's the address of the current cell in R1C1 notation. RC comes from R(ow)C(olumn). In German you cannot use ZS from Z(eile)S(palte). I don't know finnish and I don't have the time now to look it up, but check if RS in Finnish is not from R(first letter of word row in Finnish)S(first letter of word column in Finnish).

Anyway, better to move away from 2 letter names to avoid this problem.

There are a few other reserved names, like the ones that the Advanced Filter creates ("Criteria", "Extract", "_FilterDatabase") and some others.
I remember seeing a list with such names but I cannot remember where (or when). I remember it was a short list, though.

    Yes you are right
Finnish language R=Rivi ans S=Sarake so thats why RS is illegal name

    Thanks

    Re: Reserved names in Excel

You're welcome. Thanks for the feedback.

    P. S. There was a typo in my post.
I guess it was easy to understand from the explanation that the illegal name I was referring to in English is RC from R(ow)C(olumn).
    Corrected.

If it's of any use, here's the list I've got regarding use of Named Ranges, cobbled together from various posts on various sites:

    - Must start with a letter, backslash or underscore
    - Can only include letters, numbers, full stops (.) or underscores (i.e. cannot include spaces)
    - Are case-agnostic (ENGINE = Engine = engine)
    - Cannot be more than 255 characters
    - Cannot be a cell reference (including 'RC') (watch out for new limitations caused by more rows/columns in 2007+ (up to row 1048576 not 65536, and column XFD not IV) so (e.g.) JC1979 is now a cell reference...)
    - Cannot be just R,r,C or c (typing this in name area selects the current row or column)
(n.b. the last two wrt R/C are language-specific)

    - Cannot be named as:
    Consolidate_Area
    Auto_Open
    Auto_Close
    Extract
    Database
    Criteria
    Print_Area
    Print_Titles
    Recorder
    Data_Form
    Auto_Activate
    Auto_Deactivate
    Sheet_Title
    _FilterDatabase

I would guess that the above words in different languages would be reserved in those languages, but I've never checked.

    Aardigspook
