Outlook issues with xls in office 2010

We had a recent update from office 2003 to office 2010, in 2003 when you had an email in outlook with an xls file you could open it from the email and edit and save to the same email seamlessly, now in 2010, if you open it opens as read only in conversion mode, but it adds a few steps to re-attach the file back to the email. in our office we do this process of edit and return email about 80-150 times a day per person, and our office has 12 data processor, i have been looking for a work around, but have not had any luck, any ideas aside going back to 2003?
