    Rows extend to 100,000's

    Hi all

This is likely a really, really basic question so I'm sorry (I did try the search but came up empty handed).

My excel spreadsheet extends its rows down to the 100,000's for some reason. There's no data past row 1500 or so, so I'm stumped as to why this is the case. The problem is its ballooned my file size and now requires time to do basic calcs.

I've spent a lot of time developing this sheet so its not a case of 'scrap and start over'.

Does anyone know the reason why? Or how to stop it?

    Cheers

Could be Formatting, Conditional Formatting or you might have inadvertently copied a formula down.

In each sheet, select the entire row after all the data. Press Shift End Down Arrow to select ALL the rows below the data and use the Delete Icon on the ribbon to delete them. Do the same with rows to the right of the real data.

Save, Close and Re-open the workbook ... you might want to check the file size in Windows Explorer first.

To find the last cell in the active area use Ctrl + End. Then using the left arrow key, scroll to the left to see if any of the cells have contents. If there are contents select from bottom of your data (that you can see) and follow the instructions given by TMS.

If this doesn't change the situation, download, install and run the Excess Format Cleaner add-in on all worksheets. This is available from http://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/downl....aspx?id=21649

I've tried both hose, but no dice I'm afraid.

The excess conditional formatting thing isn't generating the result either.

    Any other clues?

Note: when deleting rows and columns, you MUST use the Delete Icon on the Ribbon, not the Delete key.

Nope, not without seeing it. Can you zip it up and upload it? Make a copy and delete any sensitive information.

Is this the same as 'Clear'?

AFAIAA, the Delete key will clear the contents and little else. You need to use the Delete Icon on the Ribbon. And you must select the entire row or column. The effect is much different.

Can you strip the file of sensitive data and upload it? There has to be something that isn't being done correctly or there is some other problem that isn't readily evident.

@newdoverman: Agreed. I have explained what I would do. It should help. If it doesn't, the instructions may not have been followed exactly, or there is a different problem. And it is unlikely that we can second guess it.
