Excel crashes when I try to close

I've been trying to figure out how to get this fixed for over a year but I can't find anything regarding this exact circumstance. About 50% of the time I close excel (I believe it is always the last instance of excel that I have open) excel crashes. The ribbon bar grays out and in the Styles section I get these gray looking stars with one point being green. The only way to close it completely after this point is to end the process in task manager. Here is a picture of what I'm talking about.

You know...I've never paid attention to that. The vast majority of files I use are network files, but I've never paid close enough attention to whether or not it was occurring with non-network files.
