    Problem with New Window command

I am having a problem with Excel 2010. When I try to use the "new window" command on the view tab, my new window does not open in a new instance of excel. It opens in the same excel window, so I have to resize my window across both monitors.

I've had several co-workers use the command and it does what it is supposed to: it opens a full new excel window with it's own ribbon and such. Oddly, I'm having this issue on both my desktop PC and my laptop. It makes me wonder if it is a problem with my user profile.

Any ideas as to what is causing this?

    Thanks,
    Nick

Re: Problem with New Window command

The behavior you're looking for began with Excel 2013's introduction of the Single-Document-Interface.
Prior version of Excel use a Multiple-Document-Interface. Consequently, requesting a new window creates that window within the same instance of Excel.

    Does that help?

Thanks for the reply Ron. That does help. I swear i thought that I had done that on this version in the past. I guess I'm mistaken.

    Hi ngranger,

Some sites suggest to change your registry but I think there must be a better answer. See:

The only way that I know how to open a new window of excel is by holding shift as you click on an excel shortcut or the excel executable from "All Programs". As far as I know, you can not do it from within excel itself. It's kind of a pain, but it does work.

Re: Problem with New Window command

You could open separate instances of Excel...BUT they would not act like two workbooks in the same instance. For example, If you copy from one instance to another instance, your options would be very limited. The same options you'd get if you were copying from a completely different application to Excel.
