Website excel list 'points' at wrong directory

Hi am using Office 2007 and Web x 5 (website design software)
Am trying to create clickable list of 700 images of obituaries for history group website

Have all .jpg files (of obituaries) in one folder. ( h:\\\ myname\docs\website\obituaries)

Have copied this directory to browser (Firefox) which then opened up 'web' page listing all .jpg files.

Selected all and copied that list to new excel file created in webpage software directory. (which also contains all image files)

All entries there showing linked directory to image file in same webpage software directory. (all clickable and open desired image)

When I upload this work to webx5 servers and attempt to browse, the excel file loads fine with all image files listed (in blue), but each is linked to incorrect directory (c:\\\ application data\local\temp\\\ instead of h:\\\ myname\docs\website\obituaries)

Question: which setting needs changing to ensure a click on the required excel cell gets the right image???

    Any help most welcome

    best wishes

Re: Website excel list 'points' at wrong directory

Here is what I think is happening but kind of hard to do this one by remote control.

It sounds like your content is stored on a network drive that you have mapped as H and you are using static HTML pages that you create using WebSite X5. It also sounds like the Excel file just has the file names as the links. When this is the case, the link will point to that file in the same directory where the Excel file is stored. In this case, it sounds like you are opening an Excel file by clicking on a link on a web page, which I think will copy the file to the temporary folder you showed to be able to open it. Now is it looking for those image files in the temp folder.

The solution to this is to store the full path name of the files in Excel, instead of just the file name. One way to do this is to take your existing list (assuming you have file names in column A), then add this formula in B1 and copy down:

    =HYPERLINK("h:\myname\docs\website\obituaries\"&A1,A1)

This formula will show the file name and use the correct link. (You are showing too many slashes above. You use two slashes in front of a remote server name but you are mapping to drive letters so you still use one slash. I know of no situation where you would use three.)

Hi Jeff, many thanks for your earlier reply - sorry but been away for few days.

I follow your logic and understand what you intend - almost!!!

Have tried your solution, but get 'cannot open specified file' error message??

Have attached my excel file, with column B inserted and your adapted formula in B8

Have also tried to replicate down the column but with no success???

Care to browse my file and see where I have gone wrong please??

To assist 'linkage' I also attach first four images on listEdie Acton 1 July 2010.jpgCourier memorial a z with image links FINAL MASTER.xlsxEdie Acton 2 July 2010.jpgRose Allen June 2013.jpgDerek Amphlett 1 April 2007.jpgEdie Acton 1 July 2010.jpgCourier memorial a z with image links FINAL MASTER.xlsxEdie Acton 2 July 2010.jpgRose Allen June 2013.jpgDerek Amphlett 1 April 2007.jpgDerek Amphlett 1 April 2007.jpgDerek Amphlett 1 April 2007.jpgDerek Amphlett 1 April 2007.jpg

Hope you can offer some advice??

    Best wishes

    I don't see a file attachment.

Unfortunately it is not helpful to attach inline images the way that was done here. It would be better to provide them as file attachments.

    To attach a file:
    1. Under the text box where you type your reply click the Go Advanced button.
    2. In the next screen look above the reply box and click the "paper clip" icon. You will get a pop-up screen.
    3. In the pop-up, click Add then Select to select a file from your local drive
    4. Click the Upload button to upload the file
    5. Click Done to attach it.

It will be displayed as an attachment underneath your post text. Alternatively as the last step you can click the Insert Inline button and a hyperlink to the file will be inserted directly into your post text in the spot where your cursor is set at the moment you click the button.

Here are step-by-step instructions with screen shots

Jeff sorry to have got it so wrong! Hope for better this time

    To attach a file:

    1. Under the text box where you type your reply click the Go Advanced button.
    cannot see this button
Note: I only see Manage Attachments Subscription and Rate Thread????

    2. In the next screen look above the reply box and click the "paper clip" icon. You will get a pop-up screen.
the only 'peperclip' I see is above text box - when clicked leads to same pop up box to select and add attachment files
    3. In the pop-up, click Add then Select to select a file from your local drive
    files selected
    4. Click the Upload button to upload the file
no 'upload' button visible - did not hit 'inline button
    5. Click Done to attach it.
did this and hope it works??

Attachments now show in box under message box No file visible inline

    Hope this is ok?

Hope to hear and appreciate your efforts and patience

Jeff it seems when I press preview prior to sending, I can then see the images inline.
After I post reply the images also appear inline?
But since all attachment are listed as attachments under message box, hope fully they can be used?

    ???CB

I also now see where 'Go Advanced tab is. It seems only to appear when I post a 'quick reply' When I 'reply to thread I cannot see 'go advanced' cb

Re: Website excel list 'points' at wrong directory

In B8 try this formula instead of the one you have

    =HYPERLINK("H:\MY DOCUMENTS\historical\RPHG WEB PAGE\ARCHIVE\Courier Memorials ALL\"&A8,A8)
In looking at your links, your path is Courier%20Memorials%20ALL/. This is a relative path, and that is consistent with my suspicions stated above. Your original HYPERLINK formula used a different path. Try the formula above and let me know if that works.

If you click on the picture icon, it puts the picture inline. If you go to Go Advanced and then click on the paper clip icon, it should show as a linked attachment. My link from my earlier post shows screenshots of exactly what the sequence looks like.

Re: Website excel list 'points' at wrong directory

Jeff thanks for latest advice. No go tho sorry same response 'cannot open specified file'
Could it be because the hyperlink is pointing at the folder 'Courier Memorials All' rather than one of the image files therein?

I had hoped for a solution where I do not have to link 1000 individual cells to specific files in an adjacent folder?

Where do you suggest next we try?

V grateful for your time and expertise

    regards Cawsandboy
