Open corrupted .xlsm file
Hi,
Is there a way to open the corrupted .xlsm file which was recovered after a new installation of windows in the same drive.
The message displayed when I try to open the file is as followes:
"Excel cannot open the file 'TOTALS2.xlsm' because the file format or file extension is not valid. Verify that the file has
not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file."

The file has a .xlsm extention, which means it contains macros. In order to open files like that, you need to have macro's enabled on your PC - you mentioned a new install, so perhaps you need to check that?

Tried that as well but no success in opening it.

sorry, the file can't be uploaded because it contains official informations that are not supposed to be distributed.
The problem itself is annoying as I tried converting, recovering. However the possibility exists because the file weighs the same weight as before which is 8.32 MB.

How to change the extension if it can't be opened at all?
Use windows explorer
Can you please elaborate it a bit more??
Open windows explorer
find the folder with that file in it
find teh file in that folder
click the file
press F2 (edit)
change the extension of the file to .xlsx
Now, i know you meant renaming which is the first thing i did experimented, but wasn't even close to sort out the problem. When i try to change the extension the file got renamed with .xlsx rather than extension change. How disappointing it is to have months of work gone in few minutes.
all may not be lost, the file is still there and we may still be able to work something out. Try renaming back to the original name, and then try to just rename the extention. You may be able to do this through the excel File Open window, as well
If i could just rename that extension , then there might be some chance but it is not being so applicable as the file can't be opened thus there is no
option for "open window"

In other words, go through the same steps as you would, to open the file normally, except instead of double-clicking onthe file (or click the file and click OPEN), click the file once, press F2 and try and change the extension there
Did everything as you explained , but the "file type" somehow remains the same "Microsoft Office Excel Macro-Enabled Worksheet (.xlsm)".
To make sure i did even tried out a new workbook , but no luck.
I did a Google search on "recover corrupted xlsm Excel file" and got several hits.

I have never used such tools so I can't give you a recommendation other than to try it on a copy if you do want to try it.

Tool box requires the file to be changed to other formats rather than .xlsm, so couldn't be handy enough like other softwares.
This isn't indicated in the online description, is this information in the application after download and installation? ...Just curious as I have never had to do this...always backup important files frequently.
Assuming you are using windows, which version are you on?
After your first failed attempt to open the file, have you been working with a copy of the file or have you been working solely with the original?
Can you list everything that you have tried including the use of repair utilities so that we are not going over attempts that you have already tried?
Try to open the corrupt excel file with OpenOffice or LibreOffice, this method worked worked for me.
