Removing Conditional Format Crashes Excel

I have a workbook with a ton of conditional formatting. It is slowing it down. There are mutiple versions of this file used by multiple people. The versions created in Excel 2010 that have been opened and manipulated by others in Excel 2007 are now extremely slow. I am now trying to just remove all formatting in the files but as soon as I choose remove all from entire sheet, excel crashes and goes to not responding...I have given it 20 minutes and nothing. By the way I have tried to remove from a single cell and got the same result.

Is there a back door to clearing this out of the sheet?

    Please let me know
    Thank you

You can try removing it with VBA.

    Sheets("MySheet").Cells.FormatConditions.Delete

You can open the file using a PKzip utility such as PKUnzip, PKZip, etc. First, make a backup.

You'll have to change the file type display to ALL for it to show up when you're browsing to the filetype.

When you the file is displayed, you'll see all the extra datatypes that are attached to the core file, such as formatting, formulas, styles, borders, connections and more.

Remove the format/style and see is that works.

I've used this method in the past to salvage data from workbooks suffering from bloat, such as 10 MB files with 50 GB of formatting and styles compounded on it. It's only really useful when the workbook won't even open.

    Another suggestion...

Not sure about 2010, but 2007 CF has an annoying habit of duplicating CF rules when a CF cell gets copied - and then re-doubling and re-re-doubling. 1 way to get rid of those, is to go in and delete all teh duplicate rules
    1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)

    Hi,

Does putting the workbook into Manual calculation mode first help?
