    Heavy file while empty

    Hi everyone,

I wanted to get my file lighter but i noticed that when I supress all the sheets, the file still has a 324kb memory.

I spent a lot of time on forums to look out why and none of the techniques described have worked with my file. To recap, I already tried to supress all lines and columns, formats, names and hidden names. I also emptied the clipboard and the working memory of the file as so as macros.

You can find attached the file I'm talking about.

Thank you very very much in advance,

    Have a great day,

    Xta

my guess would be you have a bunch, 42K, of styles that got indirectly installed..look at all those currency styles..thanks Microsoft....here is a macro that deletes non-standard styles....

I didn't write StyleKill and I would give them credit if I could remember who did....sorry

that is very peculiar, I even added a sheet and deleted the old one and it still came up very large.
    Didn't even notice the styles

    Re: Heavy file while empty

Hi Xtazer and welcome to the forum,

Newer .XLSX files are really zipped files to save space. If you rename your file to a .zip file and look at the components you will find "Styles" are taking up all the extra room.
This is a very strange problem but the extra bloat is in Styles kept in this individual workbook.
One test is worth a thousand opinions.

Hi and thank you JudgeH, Davesexcel and MarvinP for your really fast help!

The macro works just fine and the file is now only 16kb!

@Marvin P: For my own comprehension, how do you look at the components of a .zip file?

    Thank you a lot again!!

    Re: Heavy file while empty

    Just emphasizing Marvin's post..

Change the file name from heavyFile.xlsx to heavyFile.zip
Now Unzip it with any unzipper..
You will found something like this..

    Capture.JPG

Now in XL Folder, check out the "styles.xml" file, or read it in XML editor / IE..

    Re: Heavy file while empty

Here is a tool that claims to remove the extra styles. I've not used or tested it but it claims to do the trick.
