I have a table with text in A2:A7 and numbers in B2:B7. I'd like count the numbers matching only to certain text in A9 i.e Excel matching text in A2 and A4 then counting the 2 numbers in B2 and B4 into cell B9 totalling 19

Did you tried the SUMIF function? In B9 and copy down.

I've tried sumifs but it's odd as it doesn't want to work. The total still shows as 0
Put this formula in column B9,B10 & B11.
=SUMIFS(B2:B7,A2:A7,"word")
=SUMIFS(B2:B7,A2:A7,"Excel")
=SUMIFS(B2:B7,A2:A7,"Powerpoint")
It does work. In Cell A9, there is a trailing space after the d of "word". Delete it.

Try: SUMPRODUCT(($A$2:$A$7=A9)*($B$2:$B$7)) and drag down.
