    trying to create a vacation planner for employees

    Thanks for taking the time to look. I am needing help calculate letter into numbers. I will be using conditional formatting to highlight cells, hence why I need to translate letter to a number value and sum. Attached is what ideally I want it to look like...with each tab being a month. Please help...it's driving me nuts! Thanks in advance!

    Hi

    Can you clear up why you need letters converted to numbers, CF can also work with letters.

    Not actually sure if I need the letters converted to numbers. I basically need to sum all the vacation days (which equal 1), Floater (which equal .5), and Holiday (which equal 1). I could actually have 3 Total columns (Vacation, Floater, Holiday) and one Grand Total per employee.
    What I am doing is, each one of my employees need to input their choices into the sheet for each category...but I want them to see the running total. I hope this help clarifies.

    Is the attachment what you are looking for, I have used CF to color the cells and have done some totals.
    I have only done the per-person and per-date Grand totals, but adding the other totals isn't difficult.

    That is awesome! Exactly what I was looking for. If I wanted to Total it by each category/each employee (vacation, Floater, Holiday) how would I do that? You already got me to the end (total of all) but a breakdown by each would be beneficial. I REALLY appreciate the help. Thanks so much

    Ok,

    I have added the letter specific values at the end of each (persons) row AH4:AJ9.
    I have then used the letter totals for the person "Total Days" sum in AG4:AG9. Should you need it, I have left the original totals formula in AL4:AL9.
    The process is drawing the letter id and multiplication values from the table in E13:J14, so if one of these are changed the output will alter.
    Also, there is a box in A18:B20 which contains the each letter specific formula to sum day specific letters.
