How to access data from another workbook.

Hi. Fairly new to Excel and while I have used the likes of Index/Match, this problem is beyond me. I have a, deliberately simple, Excel sheet containing only the most basic details of a family tree e.g. Cell C2 1754 John, C3 1774 Marriage, C4 1750 Ann, C6 1775 Bill, C7 1777 Rose etc. so that multiple generations can be seen on one page. I have another workbook containing all the births, marriages and deaths etc, on Sheet1, 2,3 etc. I want to click a cell say C4 and open the other workbook at 1750. There will be so few births of the same date that the user will not have to look far to locate a person 'Ann', where all details will be available. Am I extending my luck?! Many thanks.

Re: How to access data from another workbook.

    Hello Trevor,

    Thanks for changing the title.

In answer to your question in the PM to me the answer is yes, people are still able to reply. My post was a standard one which we use on these occasions and is advisory. The thread is not locked in any way but anyone responding without seeing a change of title would be liable to potential infraction points.

However to avoid any doubt I'll remove my original post #2. (hence this post is now #2)

My advice at this stage is to upload both workbooks, or at least a cut down but representative copy of them. Most people prefer to have something to work with in other than very straightforward requests.

Finally please note that the PM service to other users should not be used for the sort of questioning you made. You could have asked if the changed title was OK in the forum, which would of course told you that the thread was not locked.
